Reading the elements
Western astrology groups the twelve signs into fire, earth, air and water. Fire symbolises initiative and enthusiasm; earth, practical continuity; air, ideas and communication; water, feeling and empathy. Compatibility interpretations use these distinctions as different ways of approaching a shared situation.
When both signs share an element
Matching elements are traditionally interpreted as having a similar orientation. Similar reactions can also mean shared blind spots. Even when you agree, asking what each person means in concrete terms can reveal an assumption you have not discussed.
When the elements differ
Fire with air and earth with water are conventionally described as complementary. Other pairings can prompt useful questions about pace, communication and what feels reassuring. A difference in symbolism is not a basis for deciding whether a real relationship should continue.
